Mubarakpur Dabas, Delhi – On 2025, 6th & 7th May, the Govt. Girls Senior Secondary School, Mubarakpur Dabas, hosted a transformative adult education program focused on adolescence, puberty, and sexual and reproductive health. Organized by EduGyani Institutes and Home Tutors, the initiative aimed to empower young girls with accurate, age-appropriate knowledge to navigate the critical phase of adolescence. The event, held under the guidance of Counselor Head Ankit Jha and counselors Priya Ma’am, Shruti Ma’am, Prachi Ma’am, Isha Ma’am, and Udit Sir, was a resounding success, thanks to the dedicated coordination of Rekha Ma’am and the visionary leadership of Principal Seema Sagar Ma’am.

A Vital Initiative for Adolescent Girls.

Adolescence is a pivotal stage marked by profound physical, psychological, and social changes. For young girls, understanding puberty and its implications is essential to building confidence, promoting healthy behaviors, and preventing issues such as early pregnancies, reproductive health challenges, and psychological stress. In India, where societal taboos often shroud discussions on sexual and reproductive health, programs like this are crucial. The Adolescence Education Programme, as supported by the  department of education , emphasizes empowering youth with culturally relevant information to make responsible decisions.

The Govt. Girls Senior Secondary School, established in 2003 and managed by the Department of Education, serves girls in grades 6 to 12 in an urban setting in North West Delhi, With well-maintained classrooms and a commitment to accessible education, the school provided an ideal venue for this initiative.

Program Highlights

The adult education program was meticulously designed to address the unique needs of adolescent girls. EduGyani Institutes and Home Tutors, known for their innovative educational outreach, brought together a team of skilled counselors to deliver engaging sessions. The program covered:

  1. Understanding Puberty: Sessions explained the biological changes during puberty, including menstruation, hormonal shifts, and physical development. The counselors emphasized that these changes are normal and natural, addressing common myths and misconceptions.
  2. Sexual and Reproductive Health: Topics such as menstrual hygiene, reproductive anatomy, and the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) were discussed. The importance of genital hygiene, often overlooked due to lack of awareness, was highlighted, aligning with findings from studies showing teachers’ limited baseline knowledge in this area.
  3. Psychosocial Well-Being: The program addressed the emotional and social challenges of adolescence, such as peer pressure, body image concerns, and self-esteem. Interactive activities helped students develop coping strategies and communication skills.

Empowering Decision-Making: The counselors encouraged girls to make informed choices about their health and future, fostering a sense of agency. This aligns with global research underscoring the role of comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) in empowering adolescents.

The Team Behind the Success

The program’s impact was amplified by the expertise and dedication of the counseling team:

Ankit Jha (Counselor Head): As the lead organizer, Ankit Jha ensured the program was tailored to the students’ needs, coordinating logistics and content delivery with precision.

Priya Ma’am, Shruti Ma’am, Prachi Ma’am, Isha Ma’am, and Udit Sir: These counselors brought warmth and expertise to the sessions, creating a safe space for students to ask questions and share concerns. Their use of audio-visual aids, role-plays, and group discussions made complex topics accessible and engaging.

Special Thanks

  • Rekha Ma’am (Coordinator): Rekha Ma’am’s tireless efforts in coordinating between the school, Shivnu EduGyani LLP, and the counseling team ensured seamless execution. Her commitment to the girls’ welfare was evident in every detail of the event.

  • Seema Sagar Ma’am (Principal): Principal Seema Sagar Ma’am’s visionary leadership and support for progressive education made this program possible. Her encouragement fostered an environment where sensitive topics could be discussed openly.

Impact and Reception

The program was met with overwhelming positivity from students. Many of whom had limited prior exposure to such topics, expressed gratitude for the clear and non-judgmental information. “I used to feel shy about my body changes, but now I understand they’re normal,” shared a Class 9 student. Teachers noted the program’s role in bridging knowledge gaps, with one educator stating, “This initiative has equipped our girls to face adolescence with confidence.”

The sessions also addressed structural barriers, such as the lack of open discourse on puberty due to cultural taboos, a challenge highlighted in India. By fostering dialogue, the program challenged these norms and empowered girls to seek support when needed.

Challenges and Future Directions

Despite its success, the program faced challenges, including initial hesitation from some students due to societal stigma around discussing puberty. The counselors’ empathetic approach helped overcome this barrier.

EduGyani Institutes and Home Tutors plan to expand such programs to other schools, incorporating follow-up sessions and parent workshops to sustain the impact. Integrating puberty education into the regular curriculum, as suggested by research, could further normalize these discussions.

A Step Toward Empowerment

The adult education program at Govt. Girls Senior Secondary School, Mubarakpur Dabas, marks a significant step toward empowering adolescent girls. By addressing the knowledge gap around puberty and reproductive health, EduGyani Institutes and Home Tutors have set a precedent for community-driven education. The contributions of Ankit Jha, Priya Ma’am, Shruti Ma’am, Prachi Ma’am, Isha Ma’am, and Udit Sir have not only enriched the lives of the students but also inspired a broader dialogue on adolescent.
