The Central University Common Entrance Test (CUCET) or the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) is a computerised entrance exam for admission to 45 central universities in India wherein one’s Class 12 marks won’t matter. It will be conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA).
UGC Chairman Professor M Jagadesh Kumar answered all questions related to CUCET 2022 or CUET 2022 in an exclusive conversation with India Today.
WHY CUCET?
Kumar said that the decision to hold a common entrance exam for 45 central universities of India was taken to provide a level playing ground to the students as different state and national boards have different marking patterns which affect the college entrance procedure. The process becomes stressful for students with different cut-offs being set for students.
WHY NOT CONSIDER CLASS 12 MARKS?
May students and their parents are of the opinion that the Class 12 board exam would lose its value if the marks was not being considered for college entrance exams.
The UGC chairman said that it was time for students to focus on their learning rather than their exam score.
Since different universities tend to set the importance given to Class 12 marks at their own level, college admission will no more be carried out through the Class 12 marks.
CUCET PATTERN
CUCET or CUET will be a computer-based test with multiple choice questions. The exam will be conducted in 27 domain subjects in which students can appear for at the most six domains.
The CUET exam will be conducted in two phases. In the first phase, students can write one language paper, two domain papers and a general test. And in the second phase, along with writing four domain subjects, you can also write a foreign language paper.
Kumar said that due to CUCET 2022 being conducted in various languages, a larger number of students, especially those from rural areas, would not need to deal with any language barrier.
The best thing is that NDA will try to open exam centres in rural areas for the children who are living there, added the UGC chairman.
CUET APPLICATION PROCESS
“As soon as students clear the CUET exam, they can immediately apply for the universities. There is no limit to how many you can apply for. After applications, a merit list will be prepared by the university through which admissions will be done,” says Kumar.
“It may also occur that one applies to six universities and gets through to all of them,” explains the professor.
However, the student would need to select only one out of the six. In this manner, the universities will bring out further merit lists for students.
Kumar says that the CUCET 2022 will help students apply to 45 universities online and pick their best choice from among them.
“One good thing is that all these changes will ensure that all children will get equal opportunities. Chances of discrimination against anyone will be negligible,” says the UGC chairman.
IS A CBT FEASIBLE FOR RURAL STUDENTS?
As far as computer-based examination is concerned, many questions are also being raised about the accessibility of computers when it comes to rural students.
On this, Professor Jagdish Kumar says that during the examination, children do not have to use the keyboard and that they would have to choose the right option using only the mouse.
CUCET 2022 REGISTRATION
The process of CUCET 2022 registration will start from April 1 and the CUET exams will be held in the first week of July.
“Our message is that children should focus on learning instead of focusing on numbers. We need to give lifelong learning to children and not make them a number machine,” says the UGC chairman.
